The location of the loft and its numerous large windows extend the space outwardly suggesting an almost semi-public treatment. Environmental issues, however, in particular, street noise and the need for privacy recalled a ‘double-shell’ construction technique of creating ‘rooms’ within ‘rooms’.
The restoration of the existing yellow pine wood floor, plaster walls and ceiling, wood window casing, and exterior wall base retains the more permanent character of the original and contrasts the ‘floating’ interior walls accentuated by the black rubber-banded baseboard.
Up-lighting and bright white paint enhance the spaciousness while reducing lighting requirements.
