The artist/living studio occupies the front portion of an 1874 Neo-Classical firehouse. The renovation consisted in providing a living/work space for the artist within a restored shell that has gained classification on the National Registry of Historical Places.
Utilizing the high ceiling height, the insertion of a mezzanine over the kitchen/bathroom area provides a sleeping loft. The original concrete hose-drying trough becomes a shower/bathing tub. Recycled metal ceiling panels complete the restoration of the ceiling. The cleaned original bell finds new prominence. The renovation utilizes recycled materials from other structures. The design of garage doors derives from those found in historical photographs of the original firehouse.
