The A. Cardamone Residence – Renovation of the second floor

2828 Mary St., Pittsburgh, PA - 2001

The existing second floor consisted of an unfinished renovation for a bedroom, bathroom and living rooms. No provision existed for heating the space. The floor sagged almost three inches from one end to the other. The client desired openness, light and simplicity.

The use of a radiant floor system provides both heat and an opportunity to level the sloping floor. The layout between rooms utilizes no doors between the spaces and cutouts that extend the space in all directions. Material choices keep detailing to a minimum. The design of the sink cabinetry and the location of the shower provide visual privacy. A non-vented fireplace adds a visual focal point and complementary heating.
