Deli X-Press

1107 E. Carson St., Pittsburgh, PA

The design for the deli depicts two phases of historical development in Pittsburgh: the growth as a steel producing center and the growth as a sport city. With the help of a local historian and artist, a photo collage reenacts the events as a backdrop to the dining area. The clearstory area forms a gallery space for the display of the major figures in the development of Pittsburgh.

Stained plywood counters and shelves depicting steel and rust are angled to facilitate flow. Electric cooking eliminate the need of a visually-dominant exhaust hood.
